Dos Donuts

Today marks day 14 - week 2! - since we arrived in Belgium. For whatever reason, I am feeling less "together" today than any day so far. Shouldn't I have everything figured out by now??? The days pass so quickly and leisurely, yet very little on my "to learn" or "to see" lists are being accomplished. And my french? How is that coming along you ask? My answer today would have to be Not. At. All.

We went for a walk this afternoon in search of a bakery as I was craving sumputous buttery crossiants to go with my large batch of homemade chicken salad I made this morning. I had no idea where to go, but figured that since I am in the city, a bakery couldn't be too far away. So we headed out and sure enough about 15 minutes into our aimless city walk, there was a bakery. We all jumped with delight (at this point I had talked up croissants so much to the boys that we might has well been in search of Disneyland). I mentally practiced what I would say to the store clerk..."Je voudrais sis crossaint" (I would like 6 crossaints) - not that hard, right? But instead we walked in and I stared stupidly at the clerk and said, "Uhhhhhh, crossaint?" To which she shook her head and pointed to the tray where they USED to be. AGH! At this point I was already mad at myself for not using "my french" therefore reviewing what I should have said in my mind all the while zoning off into my own little world until I realized the clerk was still staring at me as to say, "Is that all?" and the boys were begging for a chocolate donut. Chocolate donut? Sure, why not. Maybe it will help my memory. So I turn to the clerk and say, "Dos donuts." Yes, that's right folks, "DOS DONUTS." Since when do I know spanish?! I have NEVER taken spanish! The clerk gave me an even weirder look than before when I asked for "Uhhhhh crossaint" but thankfully she must have known a little spanish because sure enough we ended up with 2, "Dos" yummy chocolate donuts. Spanish lessons anyone? Apparently I know a bit...

Ahhh, the French language...It will come right about when you leave, if your experience holds true to mine. You are so brave! I could not imagine myself walking about with 3 kids in tow and not feeling good about the language. I am impressed that you are learning some more European languages on your journey. I will expect you to speak with a proper "Spanish" accent when you return to the states, theta and all..

HAHAHAHA! I almost peed my pants! That is TOTALLY what I would do. In fact, I do it all the time... I rehearse in my head what I'm going to say and it usually comes out "Uhhhh". So don't feel bad... I can't even get it right in English.
